Preventing fraudulent transactions on any eCommerce platform is absolutely essential, and no eCommerce store software is immune. Whether it’s Shopify or WooCommerce, fraud protection is something YOU need to take action to protect yourself from fraud as a store owner.

There isn’t a tremendous amount of information out there about fraud prevention in eCommerce stores like WooCommerce or Shopify. There are Fraud Prevention Plugins for WooCommerce, and Fraud Protection Apps for Shopify, but overall the supporting information around fraud is pretty damn poor.

This certainly isn’t because online fraud isn’t prevalent.

Hell, even Ezra Firestone was a victim with BOOM! – check out the story here.

The reason the subject of fraud, fraud prevention and fraud protection probably don’t appear all that much online is because it’s simply not a sexy topic that anyone wants to talk about.

In addition to that, it’s not really a topic that many people want to acknowledge and listen to, given the million other things they’re trying to juggle in their eCommerce business.

Whether it’s Shopify or WooCommerce Fraud Prevention is something you’re going to have to open your eyes to – and protecting yourself might not be as difficult as you’d think.

A heads up – this article is incomplete and a work in progress, so if you’re here we’ve provided some links to resources that should be useful whilst setting the scene that WooCommerce Fraud Detection, Protection and Prevention will be an area we’ll dig into in detail in the near future.

WooCommerce Chargebacks Blog Post

Here’s an article from WooCommerce talking about Chargebacks, but not exclusively about fraud prevention. As with much of their content, it serves a purpose, it’s from 2018 so a little dated and doesn’t go into anywhere near an extensive enough level of detail to help you understand what you’re dealing with specifically when it comes to eCommerce Fraud with WooCommerce.

Shopify Fraud Prevention – Credit Card Chargebacks

If you’re on the Shopify Basic plan and you’re using an alternative payments provider to Shopify Payments, you’ll basically be provided a checklist of Fraud Indicators so you can investigate an order. It’s not very user friendly from a “risk level indication” perspective. This indicator allows you to manually review your orders and take action manually.

The Shopify Basic plan also does allow you to install third party apps to help you detect and automate actions on potentially fraudulent transactions – which is a better solution.

If you’re on the Shopify plan or higher, or you’re using Shopify Payments – you’ll also be provided Fraud Recommendations. These recommendations are a more user friendly way of summarising how likely it is a transaction is fraudulent, meaning you can probably perform your manual review of which transactions to investigate more quickly.

If you want to be able to automate actions, such as putting high risk transactions on hold so you can review them before you’re defrauded, you’ll need a Shopify App.

Shopify has their own App – here:

However, there are 79 Apps in the Shopify App store related to Fraud protection.

Yes 79!

So whether you’re running a WooCommerce store or Shopify Store there’s evidently enough demand for WooCommerce Plugin and Shopify App developers to spend their time coming up with solutions.

Here’s the list of 79 Fraud Protection Apps on the Shopify App store.
