Customizing WooCommerce \u2013 Why You Shouldn\u2019t Customize WooCommerce CODE<\/h2>\n

WooCommerce sells itself as the \u201cmost customisable eCommerce platform on the internet\u201d. That\u2019s great and all, but I find it flies in complete contrast to their goal of \u201cDemocratising Ecommerce\u201d.<\/p>\n

The significant level of customisation that\u2019s possible provides an expectation, even a pressure that it NEEDS to be customised to your exact \u201cneeds\u201d and you NEED to come up with bright new ideas for features that you want to invent for your store.<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t have a depth in coding skills this is at a minimum a distraction, for those who do, it\u2019s an enablement to procrastination.<\/p>\n

Procrastination KILLS Entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

Thus:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Making \u201cCustomisation\u201d the key feature of WooCommerce in turn\u2026<\/li>\n
  • Makes people feel they NEED to customise and invent, which in turn\u2026<\/li>\n
  • Creates distraction from the goal of serving your customers with world class products at a minimum, or at worst\u2026<\/li>\n
  • Enables significant procrastination resulting in lots of WooCommerce stores with zero customers or revenue, but run by paralysed wannabee eCommerce Entrepreneurs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This by my definition is the OPPOSITE of democratising eCommerce.<\/p>\n

    WooCommerce Customisation isn\u2019t the goal \u2013 Profitable sales ARE<\/h2>\n

    This procrastination driven by complete \u201cfreedom\u201d is much the reason why MANY MANY eCommerce entrepreneurs opt for Shopify over WooCommerce.<\/p>\n

    Not because Shopify is \u201cbetter\u201d but because there\u2019s LESS to mess with \u2013 it\u2019s more attractive to startups and experienced eCommerce entrepreneurs alike.<\/p>\n

    So for me, WooCommerce need to decide whether they\u2019re:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • The most customisable eCommerce platform<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      or<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Democratising eCommerce is the true goal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

         <\/p>\n

        For me \u2013 the both don\u2019t go hand in hand for the overwhelming majority of cases.<\/p>\n

        For me Shopify do a better job of \u201cDemocratising eCommerce\u201d by lowering the barrier to entry and eliminating the need for eCommerce Entrepreneurs to be overly invested in the management of a software. With Shopify there is no software to manage and users can go about running their business. Shopify really hammer this home in their marketing \u2013 the best one I\u2019ve seen is the example of the guy who runs a pasta store and he says:<\/p>\n

        \u201cI make Pasta, not websites\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        The number of eCommerce entrepreneurs this statement must resonate with is HUGE. I can\u2019t see how this message wouldn\u2019t resonate with every eCommerce entrepreneur who has built a business from the ground up.<\/p>\n
